Medical marijuana dispensary recruitment on Eureka City Council agenda
EUREKA- The Eureka City Council will vote on whether or not to recruit medical marijuana dispensary businesses to open in the city.
In 2010, the council approved an ordinance allowing up to four dispensaries in city limits, as long as the businesses are invited to apply by the council. The ordinance was put on hold a year later after no businesses chose to apply, but that moratorium was lifted in 2013. Last month, a resident of the Eureka area showed interest in opening a medical marijuana dispensary in the city. Now, the council will vote at the upcoming meeting on whether or not to invite other businesses to apply as well. The council will also provide direction to city staff regarding any possible amendments to the existing ordinance.
"There's certainly a customer base. I know in most states, there's been a great increase in those seeking medical marijuana for various physical issues so I think from the city's standpoint, we just want to make sure it's done right," said Greg Sparks, the Eureka City Manager.
