Mendocino Instructional site to transfer from CR to Mendocino College
EUREKA- College of the Redwood's Board of Trustees voted unanimously to have Mendocino College take over instruction at the Mendocino site in Fort Bragg.
The Board approved a plan that will have the closer community college start offering classes at the Fort Bragg location for the upcoming 2013-14 school year and to take over instruction for the long term. Mendocino Lake Community College's Board will have to accept the proposal for the transfer to take place. CR has been discussing the switch with Mendocino College's administration and they plan to visit the site on March 17th.
The decision comes in reaction to Fort Bragg residents and students outcry against closing the campus. Trustee Barbara Rice said this was the best decision for all members involved.
"We are cautiously optimistic," said Caroline Iacuaniello, a student at the Mendocino site. She said she was worried about the plan falling through.
Mike Kim, also a student, said the two districts need to work quickly so that students do not drop out over uncertainty. "That's a huge issue for us," he said.
"They're not going to be left hanging," said Trustee Rick Bennet to those students that attended Tuesday's meeting.
The Board plans to discuss the issue and the college's progress at their meeting in April.
