Missing kayaker found dead on Smith River

DEL NORTE COUNTY- A missing kayaker was found dead and submerged in water along the Upper South Fork Smith River Monday afternoon. 
 
The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office said the kayaker was John Wilburn, 30 of Grants Pass, Ore. Deputies said Wilburn was with a group of friends Sunday when he got separated from his kayak and then fell out of view. The Coast Guard along with search and rescue personnel was sent out Sunday night to look for him but it was not until early this morning when the coast guard was able to launch a helicopter. 
 
The body was found several miles north of the GO Road bridge near Big Flat. The cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy report.
