Motorcyclist dies from injuries sustained in early August collision
A 27-year-old Carlotta man has died from injuries sustained in a crash in Fortuna back in the beginning of August.
Fortuna Police said Justin Weir was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital after a driver struck him at the intersection of Rhonerville Road and School Street on August 9.
Police said Weir was driving his motorcycle southbound on Rohnerville Road around 4 p.m. when 70-year-old Van Crimson of Fortuna drove his 2005 Toyota SUV out in front of Weir from School Street and hit his motorcycle.
Weir sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital where he died. Crimson was transported to Redwood Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.
Police said Weir was not properly wearing a helmet at the time and it’s currently under investigation if drugs or alcohol played a factor. Weir was also unlicensed.
The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office will conduct an additional investigation and the case is being forwarded to the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
