Murder suspect Robert Durst has North Coast connection
NEW ORLEANS- The millionaire real estate heir awaiting extradition to Los Angeles to face a first degree murder charge has a North Coast connection.
Robert Durst appeared in a New Orleans court this morning on two new weapons charges, in addition to the first degree murder charge he faces for allegedly killing his friend, Susan Berman, 15 years ago in Los Angeles. As of 2003, the Eureka Police Department considered Durst one of several investigative leads for the disappearance of Karen Marie Mitchell in 1997. Sixteen-year-old Mitchell was last seen leaning into a light blue vehicle, and the witness described an older driver police considered similar looking to Durst. Durst owned property in Trinidad as well as other locations in Northern California. Now, the EPD continues to investigate all leads in the Mitchell disappearance.
The case has gained national attention since HBO aired the final installment of a documentary series about Durst called, "The Jinx." Durst could face the death penalty if convicted in the Los Angeles murder.
