Mussel quarantine lifted by state health department
The annual mussel quarantine has been lifted for Northern Humboldt County. The California Department of Public Health said recent testing has showed toxins have declined to a safe level. The only area of California still under the health advisory is Los Angeles County from Cabrillo Point to the Orange County line.
Paralytic shellfish poisoning or P-S-P is quite dangerous. It can create a tingling around the mouth and fingertips within a few minutes to a few hours after ingesting shellfish. These symptoms are typically followed by loss of balance, lack of muscular coordination, slurred speech and difficulty swallowing. In severe poisonings, complete muscular paralysis and death from asphyxiation can occur. And, although officials have lifted the quarantine on mussels, the State Department of Public Health says it’s important to be aware of current restrictions and advisories.
