FORTUNA- A 20-year CAL FIRE veteran is taking over the Humboldt-Del Norte unit. Hugh Scanlon was announced this month as the unit’s chief.

Scanlon is a Humboldt State graduate and has served in the U.S Navy, U.S. Forest Service and at the Arcata Fire Department. Most recently he served as the Assistant Chief to the Humboldt-Del Norte CAL FIRE unit. In his new position, Chief Scanlon will work to uphold CAL FIRE’s goals of safeguarding residents and resources on the north coast.

“I’ve been established in the community for a long time,” Chief Scanlon said. “I’ve worked in both the resource management side as a forester, I’ve worked as a volunteer fire fighter and I’ve worked as a fire behavior analyst on large fires and certainly hope as we move forward, the public safety is seen, is foremost in what we're trying to accomplish. I hope that that's visible and we want people to know that we're trying to do that in a responsible manner.”
