FERNDALE- Starting off new years day, an early morning earthquake occurred nearly 80 miles west of Ferndale.
North coast residents from Arcata to Garberville felt the ground shake around 4:16 this morning when a magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred just off the coast. Early reports measured the quake as a m5.3, before finally settling on the m5.1 measurement. Thursday's new year's earthquake is one of four near Ferndale in one week. The previous three quakes were under 4.0 on the Richter Scale.
