Officer involved shooting in Hoopa; Authorities searching mountain side for suspect
HOOPA- Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching the mountain side in Hoopa for two suspects connected to an officer involved shooting. The two suspects fled on foot down the mountain after two officers fired at the passenger of the vehicle after he allegedly pointed an assault rifle at police.
Tribal Police attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle just before 1 a.m. on Hwy 96 in Hoopa. The pursuit continued ten miles up Telescope Point Road, a narrow, one lane mountain road up the ridge. According to Lt. Edward Guyer of the Hoopa Police Department, the driver and the passenger attempted to throw items from the car at the officers attempting to stop the officers vehicle.
Guyer said the car experienced vehicle problems and came to a stop. "The officers slowed down, parked behind the vehicle and that's when the suspect got out of the vehicle and pointed [the rifle] at the officers," said Guyer.
The two officers got out of the vehicle expecting the suspects to run said Guyer. Both officers fired at the passenger with the gun, but both the driver and the passenger fled down the hill side.
Both officers were not injured, but it is unknown if the two suspects were injured.
Guyer said the vehicle was registered to a southern California driver and it is unknown if it is one of the suspects.
CHP, Eureka Police Department's K-9 unit and the Humboldt County SWAT team assisted tribal polices search an estimated 50 square miles said Guyer.
The Humboldt County Sheriff's Department is assisting in the investigation because it involves officers firing shots.
