Petition for more law enforcement coverage nears 300 signatures
EUREKA- More than 280 Southern Humboldt residents are petitioning for more law enforcement coverage.
The Garberville Redway Area Chamber of Commerce created the petition in response to a lack of overnight law enforcement coverage. The petition states that there has been no coverage outside of normal business hours in the past several months.
County officials say during the night hours, it could take officers more than an hour to respond to an emergency call.
The petition for increased law enforcement service is addressed to 2nd District Supervisor Estelle Fennel and Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Downey. In response, Fennel stated that she understood residents’ concerns and is working to help find solutions to the current problem.
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors discussed a possible tax on county residents to help aid the sheriff’s department in May. The board is currently conducting a poll to see what type of tax and at what rate should be placed on the November ballot for voter consideration.
“We're looking at a possible safety tax, whether it's a sales tax, or a utility tax, we're definitely looking in that direction and where does that fit in with people's concerns,” Fennel said. “It's very important for the sheriff to know that the community is concerned. And I certainly hear their concerns. I know for a fact that we're dealing with a lot of serious issues in Southern Humboldt.”
