EUREKA- Postal workers and community members are gathering signatures for a petition to keep the Eureka Mail Processing Center open.

A dozen people were out in front of the Eureka Post Office Friday gathering signatures for the petition. Organizers said they gathered 200 signatures before 2 p.m.

They are hoping the petition will convince the U.S. Postal Service to keep the mail center open in Eureka.

USPS is proposing the Eureka office consolidates with the center in Medford. Opponents said the change will damage the local economy, impact delivery time and create job loss.
