Phone scam offers $9,000 grant, claims to be from the government
EUREKA- If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. That's what one local man has to say after he got a phone call offering $9,000, no strings attached.
Mark Blume says he got a call from someone claiming to be the U.S. Grant Department. They told him that he had been selected to receive a grant, all he had to do is go to Walmart and wire $250. The caller gave a confirmation code and a phone number with a 202 area code out of Washington D.C. The caller then told Blume to call when he arrived at the store for further instructions. Blume says he immediately called the eureka police who confirmed it was a scam.
"People should know better that somebody's going to offer you something for free, then you should not do it," Blume said. "Just forget about it, hang up and don't even bother talking to them."
News Channel 3 called the 202 number. When asked if wit was a scam, they said no. But when we asked what department they were from, the scammer hung up. If you've been a victim of a phone scam like this one or another report it to your local authorities.
