Plasencia and Kelsey pace Jacks at Chico track Invite
CHICO—Middle distance runners Gustavo Plasencia and Devon Kelsey paced the Jacks at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, each finishing second in their races.
Plasencia finished the 800-meter run in 1 minute, 56.66 seconds, and Kelsey ran the 1500-meter run in 4:46.52.
“Gustavo and Devon are coming into their form,” said HSU track & field head coach Scott Pesch. “Their good performances hopefully get them both in the Oregon meet next weekend.
If they are accepted into the Oregon Preview meet in Eugene, Ore., it will provide an opportunity for each to run against high caliber competition.
Humboldt also found some success in the hurdles, with three Jacks qualifying for the finals: Marissa McCay and Amara Clayton in the 100-meter hurdles and Aaron Padan in the 110-meter hurdles. McCay finished sixth (16.39) and Clayton seventh (16.83). Paden was sixth (16.04).
“It was a good showing for the hurdlers,” Pesch said. “Assistant Coach Sarah Ingram has done a great job with a young crew of hurdlers.”
Next week, in addition to the Oregon Preview, the Jacks also will send student-athletes to the Johnny Mathis Invitational in San Francisco.
