Police offer holiday safety shopping tips
NORTH COAST- The holidays are here and that means more shopping for people along the north coast. The Eureka Police department said shopping during the holiday season is a time when some can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime.
Officers said vehicle burglary tends to increase during the holiday months, and wants to warn shoppers to watch out for "shoulder surfers," someone glancing over your shoulder when using checkout keypads or ATM’s.
The department added that they would be increasing patrols near the Bayshore Mall, Old Town, and the Henderson Center. To keep you safe while shopping the department is offering up safety tips:
Do not buy more than you can carry. Plan ahead by taking a friend with you or ask a store employee to help you carry your packages to the car.
Save all receipts. Print and save all confirmations from your online purchases. Do not leave receipts in your car with your packages, thieves can steal the receipts along with your package and return it for cash back.
Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. An enterprising thief would love to shoulder surf to get your account information.
Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in.
Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk, or if possible, take them directly home.
Do not wear expensive jewelry
