Popular music event on Board of Supervisors' agenda
EUREKA- Summer is approaching and that means ‘Reggae on the River’ is around the corner. Located in Southern Humboldt, the music festival brings in thousands of reggae music lovers from around the state. This year organizers with the Mateel Community Center have asked the Humboldt County Planning Commission for an increase in attendance.
Humboldt County Senior Planner Michael Richardson said, "Planning commission decided not to increase attendance levels as requested. The Mateel wanted an increase of one thousand people, which would be nine thousand people total. And the planning commission did not grant that."
The Planning Commission did not grant the request after hearing about trespassing and other security concerns from property owners and residents living near the event. According to the staff report, the Mateel Community Center is appealing the decision stating an additional 500 volunteers is necessary for security to cover the new parking areas.
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors will hear from both sides tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the Board of Supervisors’ Chamber.
