Public meeting to be held regarding construction on Union Street in Eureka
EUREKA- Union Street in Eureka, between Sea Avenue and Madison Avenue, is closed during the day until June 6th. On Wednesday, a public meeting will be held to provide tentative dates for other upcoming closures in this area over the summer.
The County of Humboldt Department of Public Works is working on a nearly one-mile stretch of Union Street, between Silva Avenue and Higgins Street. Construction began three weeks ago and the project was originally planned to last two summers, but officials say it could be finished earlier than expected. The purpose of the project is to widen the road and provide a shoulder, realign the road to make it easier for cars to stop when they need to, and repair the roadway. At a public meeting on Wednesday, tentative dates for upcoming partial and full road closures will be shared. County officials say having the exact dates scheduled weeks in advance is difficult.
"The schedule for construction is a bit tentative pending the relocation of utilities that are in the way of the roadway construction activities. Trying to schedule all the different entities, phone, electric, sewer, water, is problematic," said Chris Whitworth, the Deputy Director of Engineering for the County of Humboldt Department of Public Works.
The public meeting is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Pine Hill Elementary School, and is expected to last about an hour. Pine Hill Elementary School is located at 5230 Vance Street, Eureka, 95503.
All closures will be announced a week in advance on the electronic message boards along Union Street.
