The Karuk and Yurok tribe are gathering permits and access to land to lay the broadband connection that will bring hundreds internet and phone service. The tribes are working together and get the process going.
Both tribes have a $6.2 million for the project and $6.6 million secured from a grant to the Karuk tribe by the California Public Utilities Commission.
The project will take five to ten years to complete. Currently people living in the area have no access to internet or phone service.
Organizers said the cable will be essential for basic emergency services and make students and businesses competitive in the digital age.
