Saturday morning fire in Eureka confirmed as arson
EUREKA- The origin of a fire that completely destroyed a residence in Eureka Saturday morning is confirmed as arson.
Just after 11 a.m. Humboldt Bay Fire responded to reports of heavy flames coming from a two story home on the 800 block of Summer Street. Crews were able to control the fire in 30 minutes, but the structure was a complete loss. No one was inside the residence at the time and there were no injuries. Fire officials were on scene for hours mopping up the structure and investigating the cause.
"There's a lot of different things we look at when we do an investigation," Humboldt Bay Fire Battalion Chief Chris Emmons said. "We will collect evidence, we'll look at burn patterns, we'll take statements, witness statements and based on all of that we were able to determine it was an intentionally set fire."
Because the fire is confirmed as arson, the Eureka Police Department will now take over the investigation to determine possible suspects and how the fire was started.
