WASHINGTON DC - Longtime Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer of California has announced she won’t be seeking re-election in 2016. The announcement came Thursday and surprised many of her colleagues. She said she wanted to come home.
Boxer was a Supervisor for six years in Marin County before getting elected in 1983 to Congress. Ten years later, she was elected to the Senate in a landslide vote that is still a record.
Boxer’s retirement sets up what could become an epic and expensive battle in 2016 for her senate seat. Rumored candidates include: Lt. Governor, Gavin Newsom, Attorney General, Kamala Harris and former Los Angeles Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa.
