Senior solid waste collection fees to increase in phases

EUREKA- Seniors in Eureka’s unincorporated areas will not see an immediate 20 percent increase in their solid waste collection fees.

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors motioned on Tuesday to for the Public Works Department to re-work the fee proposal so that the increase will be phased-in over 3 years.

“Instead of a 2 dollar increase for the seniors, it's going to be less than that and it will be carried over a three year period so it softens the blow,” said Mike Leggins, general manager of Recology

The board took action after several community members expressed concern over the rate increase. The proposed rate adjustment would have affected seniors 65+ years in age. The current senior collection rate fee is 10 dollars per month. That fee includes weekly waste collection from 20-gallon garbage cans, as well as bulky item pick up services.

The Public Works Department proposed increasing the rate by 20 percent to 12 dollars a month.

Officials said at the meeting that the increase is a result of 3-years of combined annual rate adjustments. The department overlooked the senior fee in past years when calculating annual rate adjustments.
