Softball Defeats Wildcats, Earns Super Regional Homestand
CHICO, Calif. – Humboldt State softball defeated Chico State, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at University Softball Field to earn the right to host Dixie State in an NCAA Super Regional. The Super Regional, a best of three series, will start Thursday at 3 p.m. at the HSU Softball Field.
The Wildcats struck first and took a 1-0 lead with a solo home run from Megan Bowley in the bottom of the second inning.
In the top of the fourth, consecutive singles from Tiffany Hollingsworth and Kalyn Paque put runners on and a wild pitch moved the pair to scoring position. Breonna Bejaran laid down a suicide squeeze, which brought home Hollingsworth and an errant throw into centerfield scored Paque and gave HSU a 2-1 lead.
The Jacks didn't hold onto the lead for long as a wild pitch scored a Wildcat from third in the bottom half of the inning.
Chico State starter Haley Gilham ran out of gas in the sixth and HSU's lineup was ready to steal the momentum back in the Green and Gold's favor. Gilham hit two batters and issued a walk to load the bases. With two outs, Kelly Sonneman drew a walk to put the Jacks back on top.
Hollingsworth added a two-run bomb to left field in the seventh to seal the win.
Madison Williams made her third start of the West Regional and continued her string of impressive pitching performances. The senior yielded six hits and gave up two runs to the Wildcats. Williams recorded 13 strikeouts in her 23rd win of the season.
