South Fortuna Elementary plans updates following Safe Routes to School walkability study
FORTUNA- Updates are in the near future on Newburg Road, where traffic congestion could be putting school children at risk.
South Fortuna Elementary is plagued with traffic congestion problems, specifically in the morning and during afternoon dismissal. The school says the increased traffic and a sometimes confusing parking lot flow can be dangerous for pedestrians.
Two weeks ago nearly 30 community leaders did a walkability study of the area with Safe Routes to School to determine what changes are needed. That report will be final in a few weeks but the school says they hope to improve pedestrian signage and traffic pattern flow around the school as soon as possible.
"Once that's been done, then it opens the door for our school to further be involved in seeking larger grants," South Fortuna Elementary Principal Jeff Northern said. "If we want to make some big changes, we'll have more availability to do grants for our school site. So that's a long term goal that we have that we hope comes from this project."
The school says larger projects could include putting sidewalks in the surrounding neighborhoods, making the parking lot more accessible and installing a lighted crosswalk.
