St. Bernard's Church remembers Father Eric Freed with anniversary mass
EUREKA - A year ago New Years Day, Father Eric Freed died in the rectory of his parish; the victim of an alleged violent beating. Wednesday night, hundreds of parishioners from Saint Bernard’s Church gathered to worship, and to remember the priest they loved and lost.
They gathered for a New Year’s Eve mass with their new priest, Father Tom Diaz. This was Father Freed’s last mass a year ago. Wednesday, parishioners planned to spend the night remembering father Eric in a celebration they called “Illuminate the Darkness.” As they worshipped in the church, others prepared a party in the meeting hall next door. There they planned to celebrate father Freed’s passions, including football.
A candlelight vigil is planned around the Humboldt County Correctional facility two blocks away. There, Gary Bullock is being held without bond; charged with the alleged murder of Father Freed. Bullock’s next court hearing is January fourteenth.
