St. Vincent de Paul serves up hundreds of free meals on Christmas
EUREKA- Christmas is a time for family, friends, and food but many throughout the county cannot afford a warm meal. St. Vincent de Paul in Eureka made sure on Wednesday that no one was left on an empty stomach,
"I like to give back to people who do not have what I have, it feels nice,” said volunteer Mary Farmer.
Dozens of volunteers lined the kitchen to provide Christmas dinner to those in need.
"I think it reflects good on the community, all of these people are willing to take time out of the their own busy lives to come down here and help people,” said Farmer.
Mary Farmer has been volunteering on Christmas for the past 12 years, since she was five years old, and said the experience has helped shape who she has become,
"It makes me feel good, it makes me feel grateful for what I have."
Other volunteers like Sherman Shapiro and his wife; both from Blue Lake have spent the last ten years lending a helping hand at the kitchen, something that has become tradition.
"we do not have family here and so it is just a good thing to do to go down and help others and share the spirit with others and help those who need help,” said Shapiro.
St. Vincent de Paul has been serving up meals for over 30 years, and this year they have served up about 350. Shapiro said the free meal is more than a home-cooked dinner, for some, it is a Christmas gift,
"I feel good about being able to serve others who have not had a meal. A lot of people will come in and say they have not eaten in a day or two or they are very cold and they want to have a warm meal."
