Staff consolidating two city departments in Eureka
EUREKA- The Eureka City Council is expected to take the first step to combine two city departments at Tuesday’s meeting.
With current Public Works Director Bruce Young set to retire in the spring, city staff has proposed making the current Building Official, Brian Gerving, the next Public Works Director. City staff has also proposed consolidating the Public Works and Building Departments, as three other workers are also set to retire. The move will not cost any jobs and is expected to save the city approximately $240,000 per year. Council members will vote on Tuesday on approving the general concept of the conversion. If approved, the consolidation will be completed at future council meetings.
"We're going to try to make sure we maintain still the same and a comparable level of service to the community and at the same time, save some money on the management cost end of our operation. And that's money that if we could save on the management end, that's money we can put back into services. Hopefully, that's the kind of money that leads to help repaving the street or something in that regard," said Greg Sparks, the Eureka City Manager.
