Supervisors to discuss new tax measure for November ballot

EUREKA- Humboldt County residents may see a new tax measure on the November ballot.

The Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday to discuss the results of a countywide poll on taxes. In that poll, 400 people across the five districts were asked what type of tax they would most prefer.

Residents were given two options, a countywide sales tax or a utility users tax with an additional excess energy-usage fee. With the poll results the supervisors will decide whether to place a measure on the ballot, or to halt further action.

“Our budgets aren't growing as fast as our costs are and to keep the level of service that the people want we have to increase our taxes, or something to that effect,” said 1st District Supervisor Rex Bohn. “We have to find a revenue source. And we've kind of cut as much as we're going to cut without finding people really complaining about the services we've provided.”

If a measure is placed on the ballot and passes in the election, the supervisors say the revenue created will be used across county departments, with an emphasis on public safety.
