Supervisors explore funding options for cruise ship director
EUREKA- An initiative to make Humboldt County a cruise ship destination took a step forward Tuesday. The supervisors passed a motion to explore funding options for a local cruise lobbyist.
Members of the Eureka City Council and the Harbor District asked the county to make a one-time payment of $10,000 to help fund a cruise director for one year. During that time, the director would lobby with cruise the west to bring ships to Humboldt Bay within the next two years.
Both the council and the harbor district have already each invested $10,000 into the cause; something they hope will revitalize tourism in Humboldt County.
“Every cruise ship that comes in here could bring in the potential of $1 million per cruise ship,” said Eureka City Councilman Chet Albin. “We have 108 cruise ships going by Humboldt Bay every year. This could boost the economy in Humboldt County very, very much. “
