EUREKA- A Eureka store was evacuated for several hours and traffic was blocked on Harris Street for about 30 minutes when an employee found a suspicious item outside of the business on Sunday.
Police say at around 3:30 p.m., an employee with Figueiredo’s Video Movies found a decorated suspicious item propped up next to the store's entrance. The item had a capped galvanized pipe with what appeared to be wire attached. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team responded and used a robot to transport the item to a safe location in the parking lot before destroying it. The suspicious item turned out to be just a walking stick decorated with pipe and string. There are no suspects at this time and EPD officials say the incident does not appear to be malicious.
"It only takes one time to realize that it wasn't a fake device and it was some type of explosive, and when you handle it and it blows up in your hand. So it's always better to play it safe and give us a call and we'll let the experts deal with it," said Sgt. Gary Whitmer with the Eureka Police Department.
