ARCATA- The City of Arcata is encouraging the community to think green this holiday season.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency the holiday's bring a lot of waste. The average household waste increases between Thanksgiving and New Years Day by 25 percent.
Arcata's Environmental Services Department said there are some tips to follow to keep trash from overfilling too fast. The city recommends giving homemade gifts like food items or give "experience gifts" like concert tickets or spa treatments. The city also said to be careful about how you wrap your gift and suggest using reusable gift bags and baskets.
Finally, they said, when preparing that holiday meal the city warns about food waste. They suggest hosts get a solid headcount ahead of time and encourage guests to bring there own reusable food containers and to utilize composting.
