Tradition in Fortuna provides hundreds of Thanksgiving meals to local families
FORTUNA- It is a 24 year old tradition where volunteers come together to collect, assemble, and distribute hundreds of thanksgiving baskets to local families who otherwise might not be able to afford a Thanksgiving meal. The tradition started when Mill B closed down in Scotia, which forced many families to go without a Thanksgiving meal due to the cost. In that first year around thirty families were given a basket and this year over 200 families will receive the gift.
Loyd said over the years thousands of families have been served and the baskets gives those families the opportunity to focus on family time during Thanksgiving without the concern or worry about paying for the meal. She said the greatest joy she gets is seeing the look on the faces when she delivers the baskets to families in need,
"I delivered the baskets last year and little kids would come to the door not expecting a Thanksgiving meal, then realized that they would get one, and it was absolutely wonderful"
