EUREKA- The trial for double murder suspect Bodhi Tree continued Wednesday with a key witness taking the stand to testify.
The prosecution called on Sean Butler-Smith, the key witness in both the Eureka attempted murder and the Arcata double homicide, to recount the events leading up to and after the shootings last May. Smith told the jury that Tree was an acquaintance of his and that he met the suspect through a cousin. Smith also told the jury that he helped tree get a ride to Eureka, with the promise of heroin or some type of payment from Tree. He then told the court that he waited in the car with witness Charlie Crow while the alleged shooting in Eureka took place.
Smith then recounted the party where Tree met Christina Schwarz and Alan Marcet, the victims of the Arcata double homicide at an Arcata home on Eye Street. In reference to the party Smith told the jury, “the events weighed heavy on me. If I wouldn’t have taken him to that party he would have never been at the party to kill them,” he said.
During cross-examination, the defense focused on Smith’s testimony in the trial’s preliminary hearing, as well as his own arrest record and alleged drug abuse.
Smith’s testimony will continue Thursday.
