Trinidad allocates $35,000 to study Memorial Lighthouse foundation
TRINIDAD - Reinforce or move? Trinidad City Council wants more information before making a decision on the Memorial Lighthouse that's sliding towards the ocean.
Following record rainfall, the ground around the lighthouse began shifting a few weeks ago. Trinidad City Council approved $35,000 for geological studies to determine the composition of the land below the iconic structure. That process is delayed because needed equipment is tied up for repairs at the Oroville Dam. Engineers expect to complete the study in about a month.
When they do, council must decide to rebuild the foundation or find a new location for the landmark. In the meantime, council approved the removal of any concrete or other hazard-causing materials in the area.
