EUREKA- Two cases of butane lighter fluid have been stolen from a Eureka gas station. The manager of the store released the surveillance video, which captures the crime in action.
Gurpreet Sohal works has worked at United Gas in Myrtletown for about eight years. He said nothing seemed out of the ordinary when a man asked Sohal if they sold butane lighter fluid by the case at United Gas. This was at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
"I was thinking he was nervous because I was thinking he's not old enough or he doesn't have I.D., because I was thinking I was going to check his I.D. if he was going to buy something, that's the only reason. I didn't think he was going to steal anything," said Sohal.
But next, surveillance footage captures the suspect grabbing two boxes of butane lighter fluid, then walking out the door.
"I was thinking, 'What is he doing? Why is he just walking outside without even paying or telling me anything?" Sohal said.
Sohal then went outside and saw the suspect running away from the gas station. Sohal chased him a bock to 17th street, where he got in the back of a pickup truck that already had the engine turned on. Sohal says the suspect had his feet hanging off the back of the pickup truck and was blocking the license plate as the truck drove up 17th street.
"Normally, over here we have a nice neighborhood. We never have a problem like that ever," said Sohal.
Sohal also says finding the suspect is about more than the 70 dollars worth of goods stolen from the store.
"I know it's just $70, I thought that same thing before, too. 'It's just the $70, who cares? But then he's going to try to do it again. He might come in tomorrow with a gun and try to steal more money," Sohal said.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the robbery. They say butane is commonly used in the extraction process to make honey oil, which is made from marijuana and causes similar effects to marijuana.
