UPDATE: Chemicals from elevator fire may play part in Courthouse evacuation, Supervisors approve seismic repairs
County officials say chemicals from the fire retardant from a small elevator fire a few weeks ago may have caused Monday’s smoky evacuation of the Humboldt County Courthouse.
They say they may have been stirred up, causing the haze seen by people inside Monday morning. Humboldt Bay Fire says it’s a possibility but they’re looking for what caused the burning plastic smell that was reported as well.
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors has authorized seismic repairs of the courthouse building to go to bid. Studies of the damage from the 2010 earthquake have been completed; they’re looking at repairing cracks among other projects. The county will fund twenty-five percent of the project and CalEMA will fund the remainder.
