UPDATE: Coroner identifies pedestrian killed in Willow Creek hit and run
UPDATE: The pedestrian struck and killed by a motorist in Willow Creek on Saturday night has been identified as 22-year-old Alejandro Garcia. The California Highway Patrol says Alejandro is from the Willow Creek area.
A pedestrian is killed in Willow Creek when he is struck by a pickup truck, which officers say fled the scene.
Just after 10 p.m. Saturday night, officers with the California Highway Patrol responded to a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian on State Route 299, east of Roth Road. The victim was dead when officers arrived. Authorities determined the driver of the involved vehicle, a 96 Toyota pickup truck, fled the scene. Minutes later, a CHP officer located the truck parked behind Ray’s Market in Willow Creek, but officers could not find the driver.
On Sunday, CHP officials arrested 36-year-old Arcata resident Daniel Roy Jones, using the address on the truck’s registration. Police say they believe Jones was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, and he was arrested for DUI, hit and run, manslaughter and delaying or obstructing an officer. He is currently booked in the Humboldt county jail. The victim’s name is expected to be released by the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office Monday morning.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the CHP at (707) 268-2000.
