UPDATE: Coroner identifies victim in Tuesday’s fatal crash
UPDATE: The 80 year old man who died in Tuesdays crash on Broadway in Eureka has been identified as Robert Mitchell.
The Humboldt County Coroner's Office has scheduled an autopsy for Friday.
EUREKA- An 80-year-old pedestrian hit on south Broadway has died as a result of his injuries. The elderly Eureka resident was crossing the street when he was hit by a Dodge Ram 2500 pick-up truck around 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The 60-year-old Arcata driver was traveling southbound in heavy morning traffic when, for unknown reasons, the driver hit him as he was crossing the highway. The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Eureka Police Department.
Following the accident the victim was taken to St. Joseph Hospital with major life threatening injuries, which he later succumbed to said Senior Traffic Officer Gary Whitmer. Whitmer said the wet road conditions do not appear to have played a factor in the crash. The victim and the driver did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
