USDA allows Foster Farms plants to remain open after salmonella outbreak
The USDA says the three Foster Farms poultry plants linked to the recent salmonella outbreak can remain open.
The agency was threatening to shut the central California plants down if they didn't improve their sanitation. The health alert was over the Heidelberg strain of salmonella that had sickened almost 300 people, and hospitalized almost 40 percent of those who got sick.
The chicken was sold in north coast grocery stores. During the scare the company stuck to their statement that if the chicken was cooked thoroughly to 165 degrees and handled properly, illness could be avoided.
The USDA said in a statement that they are satisfied with the changes made at the plant to curb any further salmonella outbreaks, but they are putting new inspectors in the plants to monitor for the next three months.
