CUTTEN- The National Parent Teacher Association “Take Your Family to School Week” begins next week, but one Eureka City School is celebrating early.

At Washington Elementary School, dozens of families attended “Family Education Night.”  A variety of agencies from the area gave presentations.  The Eureka Police Department conducted finger printing for children so their parents would be able to keep those records.  The California Highway Patrol discussed their “Arrive Alive” initiative. The TOOTH program will gave a presentation on dental hygiene.  A representative of State Farm Insurance gave a lesson about how children can properly dial 911 and what information they would need to provide, and a member of the Sequoia Park Zoo discussed upcoming exhibits with families.  Also, Cal Courts did a Zumba Presentation and Eureka’s Discovery Museum brought some interactive exhibits.  Humboldt Bay Fire gave a presentation on common hazards of a household, and Saint Joseph Hospital held a hand washing station.  The rest of the week includes “Family Math Night,” where more than 100 prizes will be given out, and “Family Volunteer Day,” where adult family members are encouraged to volunteer at Washington Elementary School.

A parent of a kindergarten student at Washington Elementary School, Holly Smith, is excited about the first ever “Take Your Family to School Week” at Washington Elementary School.

“I have always thought being a part of your kids schooling is important.  Reading with them and taking time to do homework every night, it's a big deal… I'm really excited about the whole week.  They've had a lot of events that we've been able to go to and tonight I'm really impressed by the community involvement.  I think it's great,” Smith said.
