Not even a week into the New Year and already CAL FIRE crews are battling their first wildfires. The biggest one burning on the North Coast currently is the “Red Fire” just west of Willow Creek.
It started shortly after noon Saturday near Snow Camp Road just off of State Route 299. CAL FIRE said the blaze is 350 acres and is 25 percent contained as of Sunday night. Crews will be working throughout the night and a containment date is unknown due to limited access getting to the fire. No structures are threatened and the cause is still under investigation.
CAL FIRE was also called to the scene of a four-acre blaze Saturday night in Petrolia off Lighthouse Road. Officials said it has been contained and all resources have been released. The cause is under investigation. Then on Sunday, CAL FIRE received a call of an illegal debris fire in the Kneeland area. One engine responded and handled the incident.
