Wiyot tribe to hold final candle light vigil
EUREKA- The community will come together with Wiyot tribal members to stand together in candle light for one last time. The tribe will hold their last vigil to remember the Indian Island Massacre in 1860 as they prepare to move on to their World Renewal Ceremony.
The tribe has been holding the vigil since 1990 as a way to remember and mourn the loss of their people more than a hundred years ago. The massacre happend during the tribes World Renewal Ceremony and took the life of several woman, children and elders.
The tribe has been working to reclaim their native homeland by recovering and cleaning up their land. The tribe received the go ahead from health officials that the land was clean enough for them to hold their ceremony.
The final candle light vigil will be on Saturday night at 5 p.m. at the Woodley Island Marina.
