Eureka Council updates public assembly ordinance, approves lowering school zone speed limits

EUREKA – Eureka residents who wish to plan events on city property will need to secure a permit under the now updated public assembly ordinance.

New language clarifies that groups smaller than twenty-five with no equipment or electricity needs will not need a special use permit. Events or parades that grow beyond that or impact traffic will need permission.

And if use is denied, the city manager will now have to provide a written reason why.

And speed limits in Eureka’s school zones will lower following council approval Tuesday night.

The Safe Routes To School Task Force made the recommendations to make it easier for kids to walk or bike to school and improve safety when they do.

Eureka City Manager Greg Sparks said, “One of the things that the Public Works Director pointed out was that for traffic pedestrian accidents at speeds 20 miles per hour or less, there’s much less chance of fatality or serious injury than once you get up in to the 20-25 miles an hour.”

Limits will lower to 15 miles per hour when students are present. The speed limit on Henderson Street near Saint Bernard’s will be set at twenty.

City staff will install appropriate signs in the coming weeks.
