Humboldt Bay dredging has begun

EUREKA – After a ten year absence, dredging has commenced in Humboldt Bay.
The project will clear an estimated 60,000 cubic yards of sediment built up at the Public Marina since the last dredging cycle.
Crews use an excavator sitting atop a barge to pull material from the bay then transport it three miles offshore to the Humboldt Open Ocean Disposal Site known as ‘HOODS’.
It’s a welcome sight for commercial and recreational boaters who often found their vessels resting on mud at low tide.
Initial efforts will focus on the coast guard slip on Woodley Island and the revenue-generating small boat basin.
Crews are working twelve hour shifts, and will expand to twenty-four hours a day when extra personnel become available. Dredging must wrap up by October 15th.
