Committee presents ward recommendations to Eureka City Council

EUREKA – Eureka’s voting districts will be redrawn if the ward committee’s recommendations are adopted.
This is what the ward lines look like currently.
Voters approved measure p last November, meaning Eureka residents will cast a single ballot for a candidate to represent their ward. State law requires populations of those wards to be within 2% of each other.
City Manager Greg Sparks said that the imbalance led to relatively drastic changes to the boundaries but mostly kept neighborhoods like Lundbar Hills and Old Town intact.
As for how this might effect next year’s election, Sparks said it’s too early to say. He explained, “For those who are currently serving, even if their ward changes, they get to finish out their term. I think there’s still a few decisions to be made. And this was just a recommendation to City Council. This will be coming back for actually two public hearings since it relates to a charter change.”
