Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)- When patients are brought into the Emergency Room at St. Joseph’s and it becomes clear they might need psychiatric evaluation they’ve ordinarily been kept in the emergency department to wait for a specialist. This can mean patients are kept overnight while they wait for a psychiatrist to come to the hospital and see them. That’s about to change.

Now, patients can be seen by a psychiatrist remotely with the help of a “Telepsych” machine. It’s a mobile unit that allows a doctor to literally see a patient in the emergency room, without physically being there. The device, could be a major asset to the hospital as a result.
