Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)- Emily Navarro is a student at Humboldt State University. She studies criminal justice, and has been working with Humboldt’s 2-1-1 call center as part of a class project. She’s learned all about what the service is. Just by dialing 2-1-1 after a disaster, you can be connected to instant information about food, shelter, animal care services in your area and more. Soon for Navarro, understanding the tool became more than an extended homework assignment.

Last week Navarro got a phone call from her family in Sonoma county. Their home had been swallowed by flames from area fires. Navarro told her parents about 2-1-1, a service that’s available around the clock 365 days a year. They had been forced to flee at close to two in the morning, and knew very little about what to do next.
