Humboldt Supervisors temporarily block coastal zone commercial cannabis

EUREKA – The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors decided to temporarily ban coastal zone commercial cannabis, and are taking steps towards building a Rescue and Fire Fighting Facility at the local airport.

An urgency ordinance was voted in at their meeting Tuesday, which for the time being will prohibit any commercial cannabis activities within unincorporated parts of the county in the coastal zone.

The goal of the urgent adoption is to preserve local control before state laws come into effect in January, but could be up for revision.

Supervisors also awarded a service agreement for the building of a firefighter facility at the Arcata-Eureka Airport.

The bidder, Danco Builders Northwest, will receive 5.9 million to build a nearly 8,000 square feet building to accommodate the airport’s firefighter staff.

90% of these funds will come through the Federal Aviation Administration, with the county contributing about $614,000.
