Multi-Cultural Center opens at college of the Redwoods, Eureka campus

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)- The Eureka campus of College of the Redwoods is opening a multi-cultural center. The space was once a teacher’s lounge located in the back of the Student Union Cafeteria. Now the space will be a place of inclusion, and the headquarters for several on campus clubs, according to the vice president of the Black Student Union, Rain Flotho.

It’s a place for students to come together, marginalized students and all students to come access resources, find support and just have a place to go to that feels like home on campus.” Flotho says, “When a new student comes on campus and they wonder, like, “What do I do, how do I get involved?’ They can just come to the multicultural center. I really wish I had this when I first came here.”
To celebrate the grand opening of the multicultural center, CR hosted a symposium and workshops on the experiences of underrepresented students, race dialogue, and social justice. There was also a ribbon cutting ceremony, and a Wiyot closing blessing.
Corben Page, a student who helped MC some of today’s grand opening events says he hopes this will be a place for people to open their hearts. He also emphasizes the multi-cultural center is open to and meant to serve everyone.
