Caltrans crews prepare roadways to weather winter storms

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)- From clearing tree branches and emptying drains, to removing boulders, Caltrans crews are out in force to prepare Northern California’s roadways for the rainiest season of the year.

Rainy conditions in the winter can cause landslides and promote other road hazards. Ahead of that, Caltrans steps up staffing in the winter months. “Sometimes you can’t prep for the hi-jinx of mother nature here in Northern California.” Myles Cochrane, the public information officer for Caltrans in Eureka explains.

Still, workers do their best to prevent seasonal road hazards. They only ask motorists to slow down when they see those yellow cones. “There is so much that crews do within inches of travelling motorists to make sure that they’re doing everything they can to keep roadways open during winter.” Cochrane says.
