Increased patrols could be coming to the Highway 101 Safety Corridor

EUREKA – You might see more patrols on the safety corridor in the new year. At a recent meeting of the Humboldt County Association of Governments or HCAOG, the board asked staff to look into increased patrols of the corridor until the Highway 101 Safety Corridor Improvement Project breaks ground in 2021.
Members saw the need for additional enforcement as drivers regularly exceed the posted speed limit of fifty miles per hour.
If approved by the board at their next meeting, HCAOG will allocate up to $200,000 from the ‘Service Authority For Freeway Emergencies’, or SAFE program, to CHP patrols that could begin early next year.
HCAOG Associate Planner Debra Dees said, “Having increased patrols, visible increased patrols will remind people that they’re in the safety corridor and that the speed limit is 50mph and ultimately slow folks down.”
