Humboldt Supervisors take steps in acquiring vacant Kmart building for county departments

EUREKA, CA. – Humboldt County supervisors are taking steps forward in acquiring Eureka’s former Kmart building.

The location could be the new home of the Humboldt County Planning and Building Department, Public Works and the Environmental Health Division of the Department of Health and Human Services.

At their meeting Tuesday, supervisors approved $12,000 in appraisal costs to determine fair market values for the Kmart property, and the aforementioned department buildings.

These county divisions commonly work together, and supervisors say the new location would provide a “one stop shop for members of the public seeking such services.”

The Kmart building is 59,000 square feet on about eight acres.

If the sale goes through, the current buildings of these three departments would be sold to offset costs.
